The International Herald Tribune reports on Sergio Morales, a 58-year old mechanic in Havana, Cuba, who repairs Harley-Davidson motorcycles that predate the 1959 Cuban revolution.
According to the story, Harley bikes first arrived in Cuba in the 1920s and have survived despite a trade embargo and scarce parts. There are still around 100 Harley bikes in Cuba today.
In the United States, a 1959 Harley would be considered a pricey collector item. In Cuba, an old Harley is just another workhorse motorcycle.
The ancient Harley bikes keep rolling in Cuba because of their durability. Cuban mechanics describe the engines as “immortal”.
